This guide walks through my favorite mountain engagement locations and how to choose the right one for your session.

Many of my couples choose mountain engagement sessions because they love being outdoors, hiking together, and slowing down in a place that feels meaningful. Meet Your Colorado Engagement Photographer
Minimal effort, maximum views. Guanella Pass is one of the most versatile mountain engagement locations in Colorado, offering dramatic scenery without a big hike. The road climbs above treeline, opening up sweeping mountain views, and wide-open sky — especially beautiful at sunset when the mountains catch that soft alpine glow. Along the pass, you’ll find a mix of landscapes in one place: open tundra, quiet forests, flowing creeks, and seasonal waterfalls. Because there are multiple pull-offs and short walking paths, we can easily move between looks during your session. Wildlife sightings are pretty common here. You might spot moose or mountain goats!
Easy access with big payoff, the Frisco and Vail Pass area offers sweeping mountain views just steps from the car. This location is perfect for couples who want variety without hiking — we can move easily between quiet evergreen forest and wide-open alpine scenery in one session. In late spring and early summer, wildflowers pop along the roadside, and it’s not uncommon to see sheep grazing in the meadows during certain times of year. While fall color is minimal here, the dramatic mountain backdrops and open sky make this a consistently beautiful option for relaxed engagement photos.
Boulder offers some of the most recognizable mountain scenery in Colorado. While locations like Chautauqua Park and Lost Gulch Overlook are popular, they’re often very crowded. For engagement sessions, I prefer more private foothills locations with sweeping Flatiron views that feel more relaxed so you can enjoy the moment!
I have a secret location that gives that iconic Boulder backdrop — dramatic rock formations, open sky, and soft light — without feeling surrounded by people.
Sapphire Point is an iconic Summit County location with sweeping lake and mountain views, but proceed with caution. This overlook is extremely popular, with elopements scheduled every couple of hours (even on Mondays!) which means sessions often involve waiting your turn for photos. I also don’t recommend bringing dogs here, as the area is full of hundreds of curious chipmunks. When timed carefully, it’s still a beautiful spot, but because of crowds and restrictions, we may have less photo time than at quieter locations.
Beaver Creek is the furthest west I’ll go (before I have to charge a travel fee) for engagement sessions, but if this area is meaningful to you, it’s absolutely worth considering! I have a go-to location in Beaver Creek that photographs beautifully year-round, with polished mountain scenery and quiet paths. Fall is especially stunning here, with rich color that pairs perfectly with the surrounding landscape. If you love Beaver Creek as much as Ido, it’s a wonderful option that delivers timeless, scenic images in every season.
Golden History Park is an easy-access engagement location just outside Denver, perfect for couples who want something scenic without heading deep into the mountains. The park features a peaceful creek, and beautiful gardens that are especially colorful in the summer months. It offers a softer, romantic feel with plenty of variety in a compact space. One of the best parts? It’s right next to downtown Golden, making it easy to finish your session and head straight to dinner, drinks, or a celebratory walk through town.
If you love the look of red rock formations but want something quieter and more relaxed than the busier parks near Denver, Roxborough State Park is a beautiful option. This park features striking red rock ridges, winding paths, and lush green trees that create a soft contrast in photos. It’s generally much calmer than more tourist-heavy locations, which means fewer people around and a more peaceful experience during your session. With easy trails and scenic backdrops in every direction, Roxborough offers that classic Colorado red rock feel without the crowds.
Piney River Ranch offers some of the most breathtaking mountain views in Colorado, but it comes with a few important considerations. This location requires a $200 photography permit and a slow, careful drive up a long dirt road — rushing it can easily result in a flat tire (ask me how I know). That said, the payoff is incredible. With towering peaks, open space, and a secluded feel, it’s one of the most private and visually stunning locations I photograph. If you’re looking for dramatic scenery and don’t mind the extra effort, Piney River Ranch is absolutely worth it.

Step into another world on Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park for some of most iconic mountain views in Colorado. She's a real crowd pleaser, you will not be disappointed! Engagement sessions here do require extra planning, as the park uses a timed-entry permit system during mid May - mid October. Before scheduling, we’ll check availability together on the park’s website to make sure we can secure the right entry window for your session.

St. Mary’s Glacier is a true Colorado adventure engagement location, perfect for couples who love hiking and don’t mind a little elevation gain. The hike is about 30–40 minutes each way with a steady climb, so proper hiking boots are a must. The payoff is incredible: alpine scenery, dramatic rock formations, and a stunning glacier-fed lake at the top. In the summer months, the area is full of energy — you’ll often see people cliff-jumping into the icy water, adding to the wild, high-alpine feel. This location is ideal if you want your engagement photos to feel bold, adventurous, and unmistakably Colorado.
Rocky Mountain National Park makes the list twice for a reason — it offers some of the most rewarding alpine hiking experiences in Colorado. This particular location involves a one-mile hike each way, with stunning mountain scenery along the trail and at the destination. Because it’s a very popular hike, advance planning is essential, including securing a timed-entry permit for the window we need. We typically start a bit earlier to make sure we’re not heading back after dark. With the right preparation, this hike delivers an unforgettable, high-alpine engagement session.
This Breckenridge hiking location is one I keep intentionally vague — not because it’s hard to love, but because it’s worth preserving. The hike does require some effort, and we start a bit earlier than usual since the trail sits low in a valley, where towering peaks block the sun earlier in the day. The payoff is incredible: dramatic mountain walls, quiet alpine scenery, and a sense of being completely immersed in the landscape. Mountain goat sightings are common here. If Breckenridge holds a special place in your heart, this hike is a truly unforgettable option.

- RMNP is unbelievably gorgeous June - August. It's pretty year round, but fall and winter can get unbearably cold
- Piney River Ranch for the most intense wall of aspen trees you've ever seen
- Boulder doesn't have the many aspen trees, but I do love how the grass turns a beautiful golden color in the fall!
- Honestly, sometimes a random location on the side of the highway has the best fall foliage! I keep my eyes pealed every fall to track the best spots.
