Should You Tip Wedding Vendors?

After photographing weddings for 13 years, I’ve had a front-row seat to hundreds of weddings one question that comes up over and over is:

Should you tip your wedding vendors?

Here’s your answer: Tipping is never expected, but it is always appreciated.

If you’ve stretched your budget to have the wedding of your dreams and leaving a tip is going to cause you financial stress, please don’t feel obligated. Your vendors are there because they love what they do, and no one is judging you if tipping isn’t in the budget.

What I’ve Seen After 15 Years

Based on my experience, I’d estimate that 50% of my couples leave a tip and 50% do not. Both are completely normal. I’ve never looked at a couple who didn’t tip and thought negatively of them. Weddings are expensive, and every couple has a different budget and different priorities.

If You Can’t Tip, Leave a Review Instead

If tipping isn’t in the budget, there is something you can do that costs absolutely nothing and makes a huge difference for small businesses: leave your vendors a review. Taking five minutes to leave a thoughtful review can have a lasting impact on their business. Reviews help future couples feel confident hiring them, and they genuinely mean a lot to us.

If you’re able to both leave a review and tip, your vendors will never forget that kindness.

How Much Do Couples Typically Tip?

There isn’t one “correct” amount. Based on what I’ve seen over the last 13 years, the couples who choose to tip their photographer most often leave somewhere between $200 and $1,000+, depending on their budget and how they felt about their experience. The amount matters far less than the gesture.

Should You Tip Your Wedding Photographer?

If you’re wondering specifically about your photographer, the answer is the same. No, you do not have to tip your wedding photographer. If you loved your experience and want to show your appreciation, a tip is always appreciated—but it should never feel like an obligation.

If your photography package includes a second photographer, I’ve seen couples handle it in two different ways: some couples give one envelope to the lead photographer and let them divide it between the team. Others provide separate envelopes for the lead photographer and the second photographer. Both approaches are completely appropriate.

What I Did at My Own Wedding

When my husband and I got married in California, we tipped the vendors who made the biggest impact on our day. My mother-in-law handled the food and beverage gratuities, so I can’t speak to those. We tipped our photographers because they did an incredible job documenting our wedding. Our biggest tip went to our wedding planners. They went so far above and beyond that we wanted to recognize everything they did to make our day run smoothly. We also tipped our DJ. We felt like we had gotten an incredible value, and he absolutely exceeded our expectations, so tipping him felt like an easy decision.

Every couple is different, and every wedding is different. There isn’t a checklist that says you have to tip certain vendors. We simply chose to recognize the people who made the biggest impact on our wedding day.

My Final Thoughts

If there’s one thing I hope you take away from this article, it’s this:

Tipping is never expected.

If you can tip, your vendors will be incredibly grateful. If you can’t tip, don’t lose sleep over it. Write them a thoughtful review, recommend them to your engaged friends, and let them know how much you appreciated their work. For many small business owners, that kind of support can be just as meaningful.

And if you decide to do both? I promise your vendors will remember your kindness long after your wedding day is over.
